Why are artists increasingly turning to plants, mysticism, and spirituality in an age of ecological crisis? This book offers a new way of understanding the relationship between art, plant-thinking, and ecological imagination. It argues that environmental destruction is inseparable from the ways Western modernity has imagined matter, consciousness, and humanity's relationship with the more-than-human world. Bringing together art history, critical plant studies, environmental humanities, and eco-mysticism, it develops a new framework for understanding modern and contemporary abstraction through the concepts of plant-thinking, botanical mysticism, and the vegetal sublime. Through original readings of Hilma af Klint, Emma Kunz, and other visionary artists, it demonstrates how mystical artistic practices cultivate ecological modes of perception that challenge anthropocentric and techno-capitalist worldviews. Rather than treating nature-based spirituality as a historical oddity, the book repositions mystical consciousness as a vital resource for reimagining abstraction, ecology, and humanity's relationship with the living world.
